Haitian Metal Art and our Photo of the Week

Happy Friday Garden Friends!

We had quite a festive week here at the Garden Spot. Christmas trees, garland, wreaths, red berries and all sorts of cheer have been delivered to our door.

Not to mention our holiday open house last weekend. We sure enjoyed kicking off the holidays with all our wonderful customers, and we hope you did too!

See a little video clip of the festivities here.

metal art

Speaking of the holidays, we’ve received some really beautiful metal art all the way from Haiti that we think would make for wonderful Christmas gifts. These amazing works of art are hammered by hand out of old barrels. Now that’s what we call upcycling! Read more about these remarkable pieces here.

All of our staff took the day off on Thursday with friends and family to give thanks for our many blessings over the last year. One of the things we’re most grateful for here at the Spot is you. We love being a part of your gardening adventures, and can’t wait to hear about your projects in the coming year.

Speaking of which, let’s talk gardening pictures. This week we had a picture of our own tree lot submitted via Kevin Stamper. We love it Kevin!

Happy Holidays Folks!

Thanksgiving Centerpieces and the ‘Photo of the Week’

Happy Friday Folks!

If you’re like most of us, you’re likely anticipating our annual holiday of thanks, and maybe getting a little excited for turkey and stuffing and all that good stuff.

For those of you hosting this year, Marcy has some great tips on arranging a lovely holiday centerpiece:

The first thing you do is walk out in your garden with a basket and clippers. Pick anything that has deep red, bronzy foliage. Anything you like. Just prune all the interesting things that would hold up in water for a week or so.

Find a lovely bowl. Go through your wedding gifts. Then get some oasis or floral foam, and our some water in and let it soak in for about thirty minutes.

Starting with a few evergreen branches, stick them about one inch into the oasis, just above the line of the bowl. Have a cup of tea. Then make a bouquet on top, starting with the strong foliage. Rose hips are wonderful. Then use the finer foliage as a filler.

Finally go to your local produce department. Get some apples, some lemons or an interesting vegetable. Stick them onto firm branches like a hot dog. Be sure that the fruit is proportional and blends visually with your foliage. Pears are always beautiful. Maybe add a few cones. Do keep the height fairly low, that way it won’t have to be moved once the meal starts.

This week’s winner is Lynne Shelton! What a beautiful scene. Do you often have deer in your yard?

Holiday Open House and the “Photo of the Week”

Next weekend is our Holiday Open House. To prepare for it, we’ve been busy as elves decking the greenhouse and unwrapping all kinds of pretty holiday ornaments and baubles.

We hope you’ll stop by on Saturday or Sunday, and join us as we make merry. We’ll have all sorts of tasty nibbles and Marcy will be baking up some fresh cakes. Not to mention our annual tradition of delicious sipping chocolate made locally by Chocolate Necessities. A treat that’s both naughty and nice!

We’re excited to say that Stephanie Burgess will be making an appearance at our open house on Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 1pm. We’re currently unwrapping a new shipment of gorgeously designed Art Poles. She’s also bringing some of her original giclee prints. She’ll be signing poles, as well as discussing her art and inspirations. Don’t miss the chance to meet this dynamic and inspiring local artist!

As a bonus for folks who stop by on Saturday, homegrown musical duo Blue Star will be playing from 12 – 4pm in the greenhouse. Come by and enjoy some stellar local music.

Thanks to everyone who participated in our Facebook “Photo of the Week” contest this week, you made it ridiculously hard to pick! And we sure enjoyed seeing all your beautiful photos!
